Obscured By Clouds Released June 2, 1973

Obscured by Clouds is a hidden gem in the catalog of Pink Floyd albums. The band’s seventh studio album was first released on June 2, 1972 as a soundtrack for Barbet Schroeder’s film, “La Vallee”.

Obscured by Clouds was not the first time Pink Floyd wrote and recorded a film soundtrack. They had already scored the films The Committee in 1968 and More and Zabriskie Point in 1969.

Pink Floyd was on the brink of super-stardom and had already begun recording Dark Side of the Moon when they were invited to score the film. Work on Dark Side was interrupted when the band traveled to France on two separate trips, between tours, to write and record music for the film.

The fact that the album was written and recorded in two weeks probably accounts for the fact that the quality of Obscured doesn’t quite match up to Floyd’s other creations. Maybe if the film had been a bigger success the album would be more popular. For Floyd fans it’s at least worth a listen!

Favorite cuts from this album would be Free Four and Wot’s… Uh the Deal?
I did not realize just how popular “Wot’s”… Uh the Deal? has become until I did a YouTube search. Numerous covers, Gilmore even revived it in 2006 for this “On An Island” Tour.
Great “unplugged” Floyd tune. Rick massaging the keys as in a timeless classical number – classic it is. David’s great harmonizing with himself while playing acoustic, and then close to the end his slide guitar comes in reminding one of a country tune – just great. Nick and Rogers’ “rhythm section” rounding the tune out in a close dancing ballad style. This tune will be enjoyed by the Floyd fan who can truly appreciate how extensive variety of their catalog is.

I became familiar with many of the older Floyd tunes when Gilmour revived them on the 2006 On An Island tour. Updated versions of Fat Old Sun, Astronomy Domine, Wots Uh The Deal and even Echoes were performed on that tour.

    Thanks for the comment!
