It’s no wonder there are legions of Pink Floyd fans on Long Island. From the college tours of the early 70’s, to the epic Wall performances of 1980, the Delicate Sound of Thunder in the 90’s, and finally the spectacular Roger Waters “The Wall” in 2010, Pink Floyd has had a long and well documented history on Long Island.

In the late 60’s and early 70’s Long Island’s Stony Brook University hosted shows by the biggest rock bands of the time. Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, The Doors, Jimi Hendix, Alice Cooper, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, The Band and of course Pink Floyd all performed there.
Pink Floyd Trademark Moo
The first Long Island Pink Floyd show was on April 11, 1970 in the Pritchard Gymnasium of SUNY Stony Brook. A bootleg audio recording of the concert is named “Pink Floyd Trademark Moo“, and includes the following songs:

“Atom Heart Mother” was played on this tour six months before the album’s release. For the Stony Brook show, two acoustic numbers, “Grantchester Meadows” (usually segued with “Astronomy Domine”) and “Green Is The Colour” (usually segued with “Careful With That Axe, Eugene”) were dropped for some reason along with ”The Embryo”.

Return of the Sons of Nothing
Pink Floyd’s second and final Suffolk County Long Island appearance was on November 14, 1971, again at SUNY Stony Brook during a short tour to promote the Meddle album in the United States. No known recordings of this show exist. The set list for the tour was varied, playing material from many of their previous albums, some of them never played again by the band.
